Dr. McFarland is on the hot seat today! Here are 8 things I asked Dr. McFarland that I bet you didn't know (and to be honest, neither did I!)
1. What is your current favorite food?
Probably Mexican. I like a variety of foods except sushi.
2. What was the first date you took your wife Karen on?
My wife is all about clothes and girly things. I asked her to go dove hunting with me for our first official date. She brought pâté, chocolate eclairs and Moosehead beer on our hunting trip... and wore shorts! Karen has never quite lived that day down, and we laugh about it a lot.
As I mature, I enjoy the outdoors more than hunting... And Karen hasn't gone hunting since!
3. If you weren’t creating beautiful smiles for a living, what is another career would you have pursued?
I love orthodontics. Its so wonderful to take a smile and enhance it into a confidence-building work-of-art.
I love sports but have had three knee and shoulder operations. I really appreciate restoring function to the body so you can continue to perform normal activities. Because of that, I would enjoy being a sport-centered orthopedic surgeon.
4. What is your favorite weekend activity?
I love golf but sometimes it doesn't like me. I love the beauty of the outdoors that can be seen on a golf course.
5. If you could be famous in one of these ways, which would you choose: Actor, comedian, singer or athlete?
I would probably have to say "athlete" but being one as a kid and through college almost killed me.
6. What is your favorite holiday and why?
Christmas... My wife loves to give gifts and she spoils all of us (I still have to pay) with presents. It's one of the few times that we close the office to celebrate and be with our families.
7. What types of things do you like to do with your grandkids?
I have three grandchildren: a 5 year old grandson, Rise, a 3 year old granddaughter, Haven, and a little granddaughter, Macy, who will be 1 in February. Rise reminds me that I'm not as energetic as I used to be. I'm hoping that he will be an athlete to use up some of that energy he has. I've always been a big part of our daughters' lives doing a lot of the girly things they were interested in growing up....going with them to girly movies, letting them put my hair in small pigtails, etc, videoing the plays they would make up. I look forward to doing these things with my granddaughters.
8. What do you love about doing dental missions in Guatemala?
One of my favorite times of the year is when my wife and I lead mission trips to Guatemala. Our team does many activities that I am passionate about like VBS, men and women conferences, health fairs, construction projects, etc. We do dentistry in a three-story clinic that we recently completed last year. The clinic runs all year long when we aren't there. I am proud to partner with our friends in Guatemala to do what we can to bring hope and healing.
