Many of us here in Flower Mound consider the beginning of a new year a time to set personal goals for the upcoming year. It's exciting to think of all of the wonderful things waiting for us in 2019, but some things we would like to improve will take some work and determination.
How are you planning to improve your health and happiness in 2019? Dr. McFarland and our team want you to remember your smile as you plan your 2019 resolutions.
It is important that New Year’s resolutions are reasonable and attainable, and that they improve your overall quality of life. Here are a few ways you can improve your oral health in 2019.
1. Floss every day. It’s the single most important factor in preventing gum disease, which affects more than 50% of adults. Spend two to three minutes flossing at least once a day. Not flossing because it irritates your gums? The more often you floss, the tougher your gums will become.
2. Brush your teeth for at least 2-3 minutes twice daily. If you’re not sure whether you’re brushing long enough, simply brush for the length of your favorite song.
3. Change your toothbrush or toothbrush head (if you’re using an electric toothbrush) before the bristles become splayed and frayed, or every three to four months. Not only are old toothbrushes less effective, they may harbor harmful bacteria that can cause infections, such as gingivitis and gum disease.
4. Drink sugary beverages through a straw. This practice can minimize the amount of time that the sugars are in contact with your teeth, which will minimize the risk of developing cavities.
5. Replace carbonated beverages, which cause enamel erosion and cavities, with water. Drinking water is one of the best ways to keep your mouth clean, prevent stains, and lower your risk of cavities. Water also helps you fight bad breath, and it can be a good source of fluoride.
6. Wait no more than 1 hour to brush your teeth after consuming highly acidic food or drinks, like wine, coffee, citrus fruits, and soft drinks. Otherwise, you run the risk of wearing away the enamel on your teeth.
